Claiming CPD Points

If you hold a practising certificate in a state or territory other than Western Australia and this educational activity extends your knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to your practice needs or professional development, then you should claim one (1) "unit” for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included. The annual requirement is ten (10) CPD units each year from 1 April to 31 March. Some practitioners, such as accredited specialists are required to complete more than ten (10) units each CPD year.

OVERVIEW

The College of Law’s Legal Practice Management Course (LPMC) is your ticket to becoming a partner, sole practitioner, or principal lawyer. Not only does it help you on your journey to getting an unrestricted practising certificate, but it also provides you with immediate, practical knowledge to help you thrive as a business leader in the law. Our courses are designed and taught by industry experts with experience you can draw on to help you become a leader and discover new career opportunities.

The College’s LPMC meets the requirements of the relevant regulating bodies in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia. With 30+ courses being offered across the country each year and our flexible online delivery formats, we are here to help you take the next step in your career.

By successfully completing the LPMC, you may receive one subject specified credit towards postgraduate study, subject to terms and conditions.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Legal Practice Management Course has three components:

  • Online learning: You will be given access to the College Learning Portal,  where you will access materials which will assist you to satisfactorily complete the assessments and course. You can access your materials at anytime, anywhere and on any device.
  • 3-day workshop:  The second of the three components is a 3-day online or onsite workshop (WA has 2 additional half-days and QLD has an additional pre-workshop Trust Accounting session). Please check your course above for the specific days of your workshops. The workshop is both an opportunity for you to engage in practical exercises and tutorials with legal industry experts and it is a great chance to network and connect with peers within the profession.
  • Assessments: The assessments will solidify your knowledge and skills to be a competent and successful practice manager and, to obtain your principal practising certificate

We want you to finish the course with the knowledge and skills you need to be a successful practice manager and business leader. In addition to completing the mandatory online pre-readings/activities and participating in the live workshop sessions, you will complete three assessments:

  1. Ethics assessment*
  2. Trust Accounting assessment^  
  3. Post-workshop assessment.

*In NSW, ethics is included in the post-workshop general assessment.

^In NSW, Trust Accounting is included in the post-workshop general assessment through 30 June 2026. Effective 1 July 2026, there will be a separate Trust Accounting assessment.

We can offer inhouse training for groups of 10+ attendees or alternatively contact us for a group rates into public courses. The course can be delivered online or onsite at certain College campuses.

Only the LPMC Western Australia course is an approved CPD activity for Western Australian practitioners.

The program covers the mandatory requirements of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Practice Management and Business Skills and Professional Skills.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our courses are run by a dedicated team of presenters with real experience managing legal businesses.

Requirements may vary by jurisdiction, but generally include being a practising lawyer with a minimum of two years of experience, who is looking to become a principal or partner of a legal practice.

While we don’t advise it, you may be able to with permission from your local regulator.

You will have opportunities to resubmit assessments in accordance with the course manual.
